If you listened to our Red Dwarf XI preview/adventure episode last week, you will know it's a Kryten-centric episode which funnily enough is the spiritual successor to 'The Last Day'. The parallels are uncanny, from the opening scene to the... [SPOILERS].

Its weird how an episode you used to skip when you were a kid, is the same episode you look forward to now you are an adult. Some people told me before re-watching this, that this was their fave episode of Series III. In the cold light of 2015, its definitely up there. Here we get an episode where Kryten finally breaks his programming (which is properly explored in Series IV) and realises that human characteristics are worth fighting everything he believes in to achieve.

SMEGHEADS Special // "Jed & Daniela Go To Red Dwarf XI"

This is us at the WRONG station to go to Pinewood. We only realised when it was almost too late.

This is us at the WRONG station to go to Pinewood. We only realised when it was almost too late.

This is a SMEGHEADS SPECIAL episode and it follows Daniela and I as we traverse london to get to Pinewood Studios to see Red Dwarf XI being filmed. Everything you need to know you will learn from listening to it and its a short one! In 28 mins you will get us talking about our expectations while in trains, taxis and platforms... and then you will get our conclusions and spoiler free report on the train coming back to london.

I hope you enjoy this, as it was a dream come true for me to go to see Red Dwarf live. I think you will get the idea when you listen to the intro (which was meant to be 20 seconds long!).

Inbetween some of the updates I have included snippets of tracks from POST/POP including Treasureseason, PEPA KNIGHT and HETTIE. If you want to hear those full songs, then just go to and there they are!

It was also great to meet some of you at the recording too and I apologise for looking like a kid in a candy shop. See you next week where we pick up from where we were and discuss "The Last Day" which could easily be a companion piece to the episode we saw recorded.

'Timeslides' is an episode that filled me with so much joy as a child. Here was a method to go inside any photo or film and change world history, More importantly it was a way to change your own personal history. The wish fulfilment quota in this episode is high and in the podcast, Daniela and I ask ourselves the question "Where would you go if you could travel back anywhere through time?"

I of course wouldn't bother too much about important historical events; instead I would travel back to all the concerts of all my favourite now defunct/dead bands. Watching the Beatles and Hendrix and Elvis and ABBA at the height of their powers would be incredible. Seeing them play their first ever gigs, even more so. Daniela would probably go back and visit the set of Murder She Wrote and try to sneak into classic scenes (the episodes with Tom Bosley were my fave).

Series III is forever considered the best Red Dwarf can be, what with its exploration of life outside the confines of the small rough one, the best comedy moments, the best sci-fi concepts and the best action! This is likely all true, but for me, the thing it lacks the most is the subtlety that made Series 1 & 2 so memorable, particularly 2. 'Marooned' is the only episode where the relationship between Lister and Rimmer (the best part of Red Dwarf) is examined and expanded upon, so thats why I prefer Series 5 or 2.

This is a GREAT episode though, but you already know that as you're a Red Dwarf fan! The next episode is 'The Last Day' and the season finale BUT before that we may drop our exciting "Jed & Daniela goes to Red Dwarf XI" episode! As Im writing this, the filming is tomorrow and I will record us on the way to Pinewood and back again. The sound is gonna be terrible, but hey its an adventure and I want you guys to experience it with us!

So thanks again for listening, subscribing, being awesome and we will see you again next week Smegheads!

Now I know what you're thinking. You're thinking "Oh Man, do you guys have to do Bodyswap? That's my least fave of Series III..." and I had the same level of trepidation as you, trust me, but I watched it again and remembered how satisfying it is to see a grown man shove his face into a plate of food. VERY. This podcast episode, Lady D and I literally swapped bodies in keeping with the theme of the show. The only problem is, we couldn't reverse the process...

I've got to admit, this episode is alot better than I remembered with some truly funny set pieces. The self-destruct sequence/food machine stuff is up there with anything in Series III. The bit where Lister's mind-tape is dropped in Cat's conveniently placed tea that he was drinking an inch away from Lister's medical procedure, is MAGIC.

The main problem with this episode is the problems with the audio/dubbing/lip sync. It's bad to the point of distraction, but that's us being very picky. Here is what it would have sounded if they just relied on Chris Barrie & Craig Charles actual impressions of each other...

Here is my favourite ever classic American local public access channel presenter, doing the job for 'Bodyswap' back in the 90s. THIS IS HOW I WANT SMEGHEADS THE TV SHOW TO BE. Daniela, I have a greenscreen, I just need a suit and you need a beard and we are set!

Thanks so much for listening to SMEGHEADS: THE RED DWARF PODCAST, myself and Daniela will see you next week. We are doing 'Timeslides' but we are also doing an extra special episode. We are doing an outside broadcast as we take a recorder into the streets and document our journey to THE FILMING OF RED DWARF XI!!!!!!!!!! Yes we are going to see Red Dwarf being filmed and you will come with us every step of the way. This is going to be a truly memorable podcast for MANY reasons, so spread the word and see you next time Smegheads!

Jed & Daniela (with minds swapped around)

Red Dwarf Series III is all KILLER no FILLER, so once again, this is an episode that is considered one of the best. Not just for Red Dwarf, but for British TV Comedy in general. Its hard to disagree but just so we have a second opinion, we have recruited the wonderful BILLY LUNN from the awesome band THE SUBWAYS, and look he even turned up in a SMEG HEAD tshirt!

Did I mention that the episode in question is... POLYMORPH? No? It's POLYMORPH!

'Marooned' is one of my favourite ever Red Dwarf episodes. You can keep your all-action sci-fi monster episodes, I'm the kinda guy that loves the bottle episodes where its just REAL TALK and REAL EMOTIONS whereas my co-host Daniela is the type of girl who wants to shoot and ask questions later. So you see, she was never going to like this episode as much as me, with its subtlety and nuances and guys telling other guys how they feel...

Where will this reach on the SMEGHEADS chart? Chances are pretty pretty high.

I'm sitting here writing this with the new knowledge that this little podcast, which we never really thought anyone would ever listen to besides our mates, is now the 5th most popular Film/TV podcast on iTunes. So just wanted to start this off by saying thank you so much for subscribing and listening and spreading the word. Word of Mouth is a powerful thing and you guys must have said some nice ones, because this is crazy. Daniela and I are very humbled, and will try our best to make every episode better than the last. This podcast doesn't belong to Daniela and I, it belongs to all the SMEGHEADS out there. Sweetabix.

Nick & Daniela dressed like Ghostbusters for this Halloween episode. I dressed like Janine Melnitz as she's the one that does all the admin!

Nick & Daniela dressed like Ghostbusters for this Halloween episode. I dressed like Janine Melnitz as she's the one that does all the admin!

This episode we speak about Series 3 opener 'Backwards' and our special guest is Nick De Semlyen from EMPIRE magazine; the greatest film magazine in the world. Hot off his cover feature on Suicide Squad (where he got the world exclusive interviews with all the cast) he brings his experience with Red Dwarf and also the scariest story you have heard in your life... about a pie. #GHOSTPIE.

YES this is also a HALLOWEEN special, so at any opportune moment we try to segue into something remotely supernatural (listeners to my radio show - RIP - will know this skill well) so its a real bumper show! At 2 hours and 7 minutes long, you are really getting your iPhone battery's worth here! Nick tests us with a "BACKWARDS QUIZ" and then I test them both back with a SMEGHEADS vs EMPIRE Quiz on the episode which is a real treat (or trick?!). We will continue this quiz when more Empire Magazine people are on the show in a few weeks. Who will win? Whose knowledge of Red Dwarf is stronger?

From the 4th Red Dwarf DVD set. Howard plays the theme song backwards, but on the DVD, they didn't play it backwards to show that he did it! So here's what that sounds like.

Above is Howard Goodall (a living genius) playing the Red Dwarf theme backwards and below is a video of all the backwards stuff, forwards! You can see that alot of it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, but thats not the point. Its FUN!

Once you have listened to the podcast you might want to see some of the things we discussed such as Robert the Posessed Doll (who I believe is the subject of the next Annabelle film):

The haunted polar bear painting at Daniela's University that made one student poke his own eyes out with 2 pencils (if easily disturbed please scroll past this quickly as I don't want to be partially blamed for an unsightly accident):

and this is an unconfirmed (and rare) sighting of a Ghost Pie:

So thanks very very much for listening once again, and if you liked it enough to say something nice on iTunes, we would love you forever! Thanks again to Nick De Semlyen for coming into SMEGHEADS and you should really buy a copy of the new Empire Magazine because as you can see from this photo, it's great! See you next week SMEGHEADS!

It's the last episode of Season 2, and what an episode! 'Parallel Universe' starts off with the massive fan favourite 'Tongue Tied' and it's basically the best thing our eyes have ever seen. Myself and Daniela are once again joined by Tom Dark and Tom Stabb, back by popular demand and they come bearing gifts! They have used their Record Label logins, and brought some very cool stuff to the podcast. They have brought in the detailed sales figures for 'Tongue Tied'! We hear how many records it sold in 1993, and how many since (1994-2015)!

SO, if you are reading this now, presumably you have listened to the podcast and you know what we want you to do. Go listen to 'Tongue Tied' on the streaming service of your choice. Perhaps Spotify? Listen to it repeatedly! Lets get those numbers up! If you so choose, buy it on iTunes! I just have! Its impossible to get it to Xmas number 1, but lets get it somewhere near the top 100! It would only take a bunch of us buying the track or streaming it for a while to achieve good results!

Lister has to face some serious role-reversal consequences when he slips into a parallel universe. Subscribe to Comedy Greats for more hilarious videos:

We discuss ALOT of stuff on this podcast, besides Red Dwarf, as I think its important you get to know us as presenters so we aren't just faceless robots! You can also interact with us on RedDwarf.Co.Uk forums and I really really recommend you join if you are even a casual Red Dwarf fan. Its the number one place to talk about this subject and nobody will judge you if you say how much you fancy Kryten. Its full of great people and Red Dwarf fans should get to know each other, its only the right thing to do with a new series coming up!

As we have got to the end of Series 2, here are the Smeg Ups. Some of them are even funny!

All the Smeg-Ups from the Red Dwarf crew!

At one point, the Smegheads crew somehow get onto the subject of 'taTu', who myself and Tom Stabb call "one of the best pop bands ever", and I really do believe this! I know this isn't Red Dwarf related, but they should get alot more love than they currently do!

"Not Gonna Get Us" - the second music video from t.A.T.u.'s debute album "200 Km/H In The Wrong Lane (2003). English language pair to the song "Nas Ne Dogonyat" ("200 Po Vstrechnoi", 2001). ______ Waste Management studio album is out and available at iTunes:

Like last week, due to the Two Toms working in music, here is Tom Stabb's mixtape for you Smegheads. Made up of the best current and new bands from Sony/Columbia! Its really really cool.

And as always, I am going to leave you with a series of the weirdest and wonderful-est Red Dwarf related videos I can find. As its the end of the series, I've found quite a few and they are mostly Tongue Tied covers. The first one is incredible! We will see you next week SMEGHEADS with the start of Season 3! Joining us is Nick De Semelyn from Empire Magazine who will be putting up with myself and Daniela for one of the best episodes of Red Dwarf ever... 'BACKWARDS!' Im so excited!

jed & daniela

So many good episodes in Series 2, and this is one of the best of a good bunch. Queeg sees Red Dwarf's amiable computer, Holly, being succeeded by the backup computer named QUEEG 500. Holly has to prove himself to be the better computer and win back the trust if the crew. Is he as incompetent as everyone believes him to be? Yeah probably.

Well guys, we are really flying through these episodes and you seem to like them as they are getting more and more popular! This episode we cast our eyes on 'Stasis Leak' which is one of the few times we see the crew of red dwarf pre-accident! The crew find a "stasis leak" which is what Daniela calls "a magic hole" in time, that allows them to go back to before the accident. The boys aim to use this opportunity to save Rimmer (Rimmer) and Kochanski (Lister).

You know the voices, now know the faces! (see I did let her wear the Pokemon hat!)

You know the voices, now know the faces! (see I did let her wear the Pokemon hat!)

Here Lister falls into a self-pity hole and laments the fact he can never catch a break, especially with Kochanski.

But lo, whats this? He does get with Kochanski, albeit 5 years in the future! Damiela and I discuss how unfair it is that he didnt get to have a cheeky snog with his future wife.

And as always, I will leave you with the weirdest Red Dwarf related video I can find. This time its an unusual cover of the RD theme that the more I watch, the more I love. (There are so many Red Dwarf cover songs on youtube!)

If you havent already subscribed, please do, and tell as many Red Dwarf fans as you can! Also if you want us to sort out a 'SMEGHEADS LIVE!' where we can all get together and record a podcast with a live audience, then let us know!

See you next week Smegheads!

Hey everyone, we have come to one of my favourite episodes of Red Dwarf ever, 'Thanks for The Memory'! Yes it isnt flashy and there are barely any interesting spacey effects, but this gets maximum points from myself and Daniela for the way it developed the relationship between Lister and Rimmer. You really see the affection they have for each other (but hide most of the time) and its something Daniela and I could learn alot from.

You will notice that we argued for alot of this podcast, mostly because of Daniela's rise in popularity amongst Red Dwarf fans on the official Red Dwarf site! They asked me to make her join, and she has now signed up and awaiting approval! Be nice to her guys! Please do not start the hashtag #welovedaniela though, as this is meant to be a partnership, not the Daniela show... :)

This is also the episode where the infamous "Triple Friend Egg, Chilli, Chutney Sarnie" makes an appearance and has forever lived in the hearts and stomachs of die-hard Red Dwarf fans. SO, I made it on the podcast and you can hear the disgusting results. Daniela was not happy as she hates eggs (How can someone hate eggs? That's like hating oxygen) Happy birthday to her mum! Watch me eat this classic sandwich below. As Im writing this, Im feeling a little queasy.

I was very excited to speak to Sabra Williams who plays the main object of affection in this episode, Lise Yates and she gave me the impression she doesnt talk about Red Dwarf too much (it was a long time ago!). We also discuss her work with Tom Cruise, her role opposite Kyle Maclachlan AND her current work with the legend that is Tim Robbins! We also find out what happened when she met Ed Bye in Los Angeles! My fave thing she has ever done (besides Red Dwarf) is her stint as presenter of the weirdest childrens show ever, GHOST TRAIN!

Below a video I discussed with Sabra (I had to cut most of the 'Ghost Train' talk out as this episode is already the longest one ever!) where she fires generla knowledge questions at quite a scared looking child. If she gets it wrong, they all get gunged! She gets it wrong every time and at one stage you can hear the kid whimper "MUM!". Scary stuff, but I absolutely loved this show! You truly wouldnt get a kids TV show like this right now, as pitching a show about the ownership of a Ghost Train, while running from someone called Barry Mafia and befriending a talking sheep called Nobby, is too much to take in the 21st century.

One more GHOST TRAIN video and this one is incredible. Its Sabra interviewing ADAM ANT. Holy cow, this is very surreal, but Sabra deals with his interesting behaviour (for a kids show anyway) very well!

Thanks so much to Sabra and if you want to find out more about her, you can check out these places:

and most of all, she wants to learn more about Twitter, so make sure you click on this link, follow her and say hello!

Once again, thanks to everyone who has made SMEGHEADS their very own podcast, and have told their friends about it. It means alot to us to see you guys talk about it on forums and social networks. If you havent already subscribed, please do and I promise it hasnt gone to our heads (well at least not me... this is how Daniela turned up today!)

this one is for "ANT E" on the forums.

Daniela and I will see you next week Smegheads and this time I will leave you with the weirdest Red Dwarf video I have seen for a while. Some Americans recreated a part of "Thanks for the Memory" in their own inimitable style. I dont know what this is, and I dont want to look to deep into it. enjoy and goodbye!

'Better Than Life' is one of the most popular episode of Red Dwarf ever and with good reason. Its the first time the crew have actually gone somewhere besides Red Dwarf (and the Nova 5 I guess!) even though it is a virtual reality game. We get to see the boys in a new environment, free from the constrains of the spaceship and reality. All of their dreams can become real, all they have to do is wish. Unfortunately for them, Rimmer is in tow and ruins it for everyone.

In this podcast episode, Daniela and I discuss what we would do if we had access to 'Better Than Life', and Daniela drops the bombshell that she is going off on holiday to hang out with movie stars, while I am left in the office to edit this! Its okay though as there is no break for you guys!

This episode of SMEGHEADS will mostly be remembered for descending into "bad date" stories. Daniela's story was about ice cream and my story was about urine. Besides that, this was surprisingly a GREAT episode of Red Dwarf, and I really don't remember it being this good.

Its the episode where Lister gets radiation poisoning which - being a sci fi comedy - means his hallucinations come to life. This comes in the form of a creepy old guy which is the physical manifestation of Lister's Paranoia; and a smarmy loud American which represents Lister's Confidence. Things escalate quickly and it does not end too well.

This episode is also the first time the crew encounter another human, in the Mayor of Warsaw. Its too bad he instantly combusts the second he appears, but then some relationships are like that right?

For more info on this episode of Red Dwarf, here is some excellent data!

Background Information

  • Craig Ferguson and Lee Cornes originally auditioned for the parts of Lister and Rimmer, respectively. Ferguson later relocated to the US and became known for his work co-starring on The Drew Carey Showand, later, as host of The Late Late Show with Craig FergusonHattie Hayridge was once a guest on his talk show.
  • The exterior of the ship seen during the space walk was a large, purpose-built set by designer Paul Montague.
  • Peter Wragg's effects team built a full-sized dummy of Confidence to explode outside the ship with a high pressure burst. Actor Craig Charles appeared to be hurt, but was only acting.
  • Red Dwarf composer Howard Goodall made a unique musical theme for the space walk scene. It is heard in the episode (as Confidence "cha-cha-cha"s) but the full isolated cue can be heard on the Series I DVD special features. It is a mash up of the 2001: A Space Odyssey-like opening cue of the old series with theThe Blue Danube Waltz.

  • References
    • The episode contains the first mention of Dream Recorders; these would become significant in the Series IIepisode "Parallel Universe", where as a one-off joke would transform into the Tongue Tied music video.
    • Rimmer reveals that he was part of the "Love Celibacy Society" because he believed "their philosophy that love is a sickness, holds back your career and takes all your money"; but Lister says it was because he couldn't get a date. Ironically Rimmer would later fall in love with Nirvanah Crane on-board the Holoshipwhere love is also seen as something primitive.
    • Inside the space suit, Lister mentions his claustrophobia. This would be mentioned again in the Xpress Lifts, and would became a major plot point in the Series VII episode "Duct Soup".

  • Goofs
    • When Lister is about to activate Kristine Kochanski's hologram disc in the Drive Room, her name is written on the box. Her first initial is incorrectly labelled as a "C" instead of a "K".
    • This is perhaps referenced in the Series VII episode "Duct Soup", when Lister and Kochanski give Kryten a pendant with his name inscribed in the wrong way, similarly with a "C" instead of a "K".
    • Despite the fact that Lister and his Confidence were in outer space to recover the Hologram disks, they don't seem to be experiencing zero gravity. The only instance of "zero gravity" shown is a shot of Lister jumping the barrier in an effort to evade Confidence which was edited in slow motion.
    • This is maybe not a goof. It is possible that whatever generates artificial gravity aboard Red Dwarf also works on the walkways along the outer hull. It is possible that the artificial gravity "stops" just past the hull, and is why Lister enters "slow-motion" when jumping the barriers further out.

Dont forget that tickets for the filming of the new season will be available soon; apparently the announcement will be made next week!

Thanks for listening and we will see you next week for the super finale episode! Subscribe and Share! See you later SMEGHEADS!

It took 4 episodes, bit FINALLY we discover a little bit more about CAT! So far he has been a little one dimensional, and to be honest, he is this way until Season 3, but here we get to see him at his most Cat-like. We see why he is always creeping around the air ducts, and *SPOILERS* the fact he is not the only CAT aboard!

I love the stuff about the Cat arks, and its a real shame that Red Dwarf has not explored the option of meeting the second Cat Ark (the other one flew into a sun) as the prospect of a shipful of them can only make our Cat a fuller character.

The stuff about Lister being the Cat "God" is always brilliant and I also hope this is explored more in Seasons XI and XII.

We ask the question: If they can get food instantly from the machines, how come they run out of certain foods in later episodes? Does it come from a stock? Is it like a Star Trek replicator? Does it matter?

I know what you're thinking. You don't have to say it. You don't have to say the words "Jed and Daniela, how on earth are you going to do a Red Dwarf podcast on 'Balance of Power'? Its the worst episode ever and hardly anything happens! Why put yourself through it you idiots!" and my reply is "Well mum, we've got to at least try!" So we did!

Yes, this is the worst episode of Red Dwarf, but even the worst episode of this show is miles better than the best episodes of some other shows. It has enough interesting things in it to keep us going.

This episode is all about Rimmer trying to assert himself and establish a recognised hierarchy on Red Dwarf, even though it's only himself and Lister aboard. He does this by bribing Lister into doing things by rewarding him with cigarettes he has hidden in an air duct. Lister aims to counteract this situation by passing the Chef's exam, automatically making him Rimmer's superior, and therefore disrupting the "balance of power" currently aboard Red Dwarf. Rimmer resorts to some sneaky tactics to try to put Lister off. It sounds fine when written down, but this episode is weak compared to anything else in Season 1.

Beside the Red Dwarf stuff we also hear startling revelations about Daniela's drinking games, and Jed attempts a joke about a crocodile.

See you next week Smegheads! Don't forget to SUBSCRIBE on Itunes, and say nice things. I will leave you with a lady playing the Red Dwarf theme on a saxophone because you deserve it.

This is more amusing than it first looks.

This is more amusing than it first looks.

I loved this episode. Its full of errors and plays havoc with the Red Dwarf continuity timeline, but its the first time we see proper "hard" sci-fi on Red Dwarf. I've always been a fan of anything even remotely linked to Time Travel. I think it's because I have a latent idea that it will be me that discovers it. Surely its something to do with magnets right? Magnets and static electricity?

So in this podcast episode, Myself (Jed) and Daniela try to work out exactly what we are seeing to our non-scientific minds, and discuss if there is such a thing as fate, and if so, can it be changed in any way?

If razors in the future produce that much blood from one little nick, it's no wonder Lister has a massive beard when he is 171 years old.

If you haven't done so already, please subscribe on iTunes (or any other podcast service you use - I use Overcast!) and perhaps write a nice review. Itunes is also the best place to leave us a comment, or question, or Red Dwarf fact!

Thanks again for listening and stay tuned for future episodes where we have somehow managed to convince some cast members to come along and be on the podcast. I wont tell Daniela who I've got lined up, and she won't tell me either. I'm hoping it's Clare Grogan so I can blast out Altered Images in the office and we can duet!

See ya later SMEGHEADS!
